Uses and Desired Changes of the Freiburg Gewerbe canal

IThe objective of this work is twofold: first to define the current uses of the Gewerbe canal and secondly to investigate if changes in the physical design of the canal are desired. This information should make easier the implementation of future canal plans, which may be used to enhance sustainability and recreational use.

Quantitative interviews will be carried out with three groups: home owners and residents along the canal, students who regularly come into contact with the canal, and random sampling of Freiburg citizens.
Interviews will be accomplished in two phases. First, the interviewees will be asked to describe what they know about the canal, their usage's of the canal, and to imagine any improvements they can imagine. The second phase of interview will be carried out with the aid of photos, which will be shown to the interviewees as examples of possible canal changes. The interviewee will be asked to select his or her favorite implementation. The photos will be drawn from a parallel research of existing canal restoration projects throughout the country.

Finally, relationships will be made between the different interviewee groups and their attitudes toward the canal, as well as the type of changes desired.
